Niemiecki Instytut Historyczny w Warszawie (NIH), utworzony w 1993 roku, jest jednym z sześciu Niemieckich Instytutów Historycznych za granicą. Wspólnie ze swymi pięcioma siostrzanymi Instytutami w Rzymie (1888), Paryżu (1958), Londynie (1976), Waszyngtonie (1986) i Moskwie (2005) oraz Instytutem Orientalistyki w Bejrucie (1961), Instytutem Studiów Japońskich w Tokio (1988), Forum Historii Sztuki w Paryżu (1997), Instytutem Orientalistyki w Stambule (2009) i Forum Maxa Webera dla Studiów Południowoazjatyckich w Delhi (2021) należy do fundacji prawa publicznego im. Maxa Webera Niemieckie Instytuty Humanistyczne za Granicą, i za jej pośrednictwem finansowany jest ze środków budżetowych niemieckiego Ministerstwa Edukacji i Badań.
